A shooting took place late Tuesday night in a warehouse located in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, leaving one person dead and five others injured. Authorities believe the shooting may have been “targeted.” The incident happened at KDC/One, a company that makes cosmetics and toiletries, in New Albany, a city about 15 miles northeast of Columbus.
New Albany Police Chief Greg Jones spoke to the media early Wednesday morning, stating that a person of interest had been identified. He added that the police were working to bring this person into custody. However, it was unclear if the suspect worked at the company. The police chief also mentioned that while the motive for the shooting was still unknown, there was no immediate danger to others in the area.
Jones explained that the wounded individuals were taken to local hospitals, but their conditions were not immediately known. Officers found a firearm at the scene of the shooting.
When the police arrived at the warehouse around 11 p.m., they found some people “self-evacuating” from the building, meaning they were leaving on their own. The rest of the people, about 150 in total, were evacuated to another nearby building. A drone was used to help with the evacuation process.
Some of the people who were evacuated were later interviewed by the police. However, there was a language barrier with several of them, making it harder for them to understand what had happened. Many of the workers didn’t even know about the shooting until they were safely evacuated.
Chief Jones expressed his sadness over the tragic event, offering thoughts and support for the victims, their families, and everyone who works at the facility. He emphasized that while the community had hoped such an event would never happen, the police are always prepared for such situations. This tragic incident has shaken the local community, and authorities are continuing their investigation to find out what happened and why it occurred.
