A heartbreaking tragedy struck a family in Zebulon, North Carolina, early Thanksgiving morning when a 55-year-old man, Robert Cummings, was shot and killed outside his home.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. on November 28. Police responding to a call found Robert unresponsive in his front yard with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, he didn’t survive. Now, detectives are working hard to figure out who’s behind this terrible act and have asked the community for help.
For Robert’s family, the pain is unimaginable. His son, Damain, told a local news station, WRAL, that the moment he heard about his father’s death, it felt unreal. “I kept thinking, maybe this is just a bad dream,” he said. Damain’s grandmother, Cora, recalled the chilling moment she heard gunshots outside her home. “I heard two shots, and then someone made a noise. It sounded just like Robert,” she shared with heartbreak in her voice.
As the family deals with their loss, they’re also facing the financial strain of arranging a funeral. Damain set up a GoFundMe page, hoping to gather support for the expenses. “I want to help my grandma as much as I can,” he wrote on the page. “This is so hard on her, and we’re trying to give my dad a proper goodbye while searching for answers about who did this to our family.”
Damain also made a heartfelt plea to the public. “Imagine if this was your loved one. Wouldn’t you want answers and peace of mind? If you know something, please come forward,” he urged.
So far, investigators haven’t named any suspects or made arrests, leaving Robert’s loved ones and neighbors desperate for justice. The family is holding onto hope that someone will step up and provide the key information needed to solve this case.
As they mourn the loss of a father, son, and friend, the community has been asked to help, whether through donations or by sharing what they know. For Robert’s family, every bit of support counts as they navigate this painful time.
