Two students from Berkeley High School were arrested on December 11 for bringing guns onto campus, marking the third troubling incident involving the school since October.
The police were called in during lunch when someone reported that a student might have a handgun. Officers quickly arrived to investigate, but the school didn’t go into lockdown. Thankfully, no guns were shown, and no threats were made to students or staff.
During their search, police found two handguns, including one with an extended magazine. Both weapons were taken away, and the students—two boys aged 17 and 18—were arrested without any problems.
The Berkeley Unified School District issued a statement, calling this a “serious safety issue” and promised to work with the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) to investigate what happened.
Interestingly, just a day earlier, on December 10, school staff received alarming emails claiming that explosives had been planted in schools across Berkeley. While the school district called these messages “spam hoaxes,” they still informed the police and told school principals to stay alert and report anything suspicious.
This isn’t the first incident at Berkeley High School recently. Back in October, a student was reportedly pistol-whipped while walking to football practice in downtown Berkeley, not far from the school. The attacker also robbed him. A 15-year-old boy was later arrested for the assault and for having a concealed gun on campus.
These incidents have raised concerns about safety at Berkeley High, leaving students, parents, and staff understandably worried about what might happen next.
