I remember when getting a fast food breakfast was a bit of a challenge. Not anymore! Now, almost every fast food place has breakfast sandwiches, and each chain is trying to stand out in the crowded market.
As a regular customer of Starbucks breakfast sandwiches, I have to admit, I wasn’t completely sold on all of their options. So, I decided to do a little research and taste test different sandwiches from several fast food chains to get a better idea of what’s out there.
I picked sandwiches from a variety of chains to get a well-rounded view of the breakfast egg sandwich scene. Over a few mornings, my husband and I tried these sandwiches and ranked them based on texture, flavor, and overall experience. And let me tell you, I found some hidden gems along the way.
McDonald’s Sausage McMuffin With Egg
I remember when getting McDonald’s breakfast felt like a win. I used to love the Steak, Egg, and Cheese Bagel, but it’s no longer on the menu. So, I tried the Sausage McMuffin with Egg. Honestly, it was just too simple. It was dry, both in texture and flavor. The muffin was kind of gummy, and overall, it didn’t stand out. If you need a quick breakfast on the go, it might work, but it’s not something I’d crave regularly.
Starbucks’ Double-Smoked Bacon, Cheddar & Egg Sandwich
I usually enjoy Starbucks’ breakfast sandwiches, but the Double-Smoked Bacon, Cheddar & Egg Sandwich didn’t impress me this time. The croissant was dry, not flaky, and it lacked that buttery, light texture that a croissant should have. I’ve had this sandwich before and enjoyed it more, but consistency is key in fast food, and this one missed the mark.
Starbucks’ Egg, Pesto & Mozzarella Sandwich
I was excited to try the Egg, Pesto & Mozzarella Sandwich because I love pesto. Unfortunately, the pesto was just too strong, and it overpowered the other flavors. The sandwich itself was soft, but the texture felt like it had been microwaved. If you love pesto, this might be your thing, but for me, it was a bit much.
Wendy’s Bacon, Egg & Swiss Croissant
Wendy’s Bacon, Egg & Swiss Croissant looked promising, but the croissant’s texture was off. It wasn’t flaky like I expected—it was soft and a bit dense, likely from sitting under a heat lamp. The flavor, though, was good, with a nice mix of bacon and cheese sauce. It could’ve used a better croissant, though.
Chick-Fil-A Egg White Grill
Chick-fil-A’s Egg White Grill is a healthier option. The grilled chicken and egg white felt light and fresh, but the sandwich didn’t quite have the flavor punch I was hoping for. It’s great if you’re looking for something lean, but it’s not something I’d crave.
Dunkin’ Sourdough Breakfast Sandwich
I’m more of a Starbucks person, but Dunkin’ might be onto something with their Sourdough Breakfast Sandwich. The bread was thick and substantial, but it was a bit dry and lacked the crispiness I was hoping for. A little more cheese would’ve helped. It’s a solid choice for a car breakfast, though.
McDonald’s Sausage Biscuit With Egg
I don’t usually think of biscuits for breakfast, but McDonald’s Sausage Biscuit with Egg surprised me. The biscuit was a bit dry and not as flaky as I expected, but the balance of ingredients was good. It’s not a top choice, but it’s better than the McMuffin.
Starbucks’ Impossible Breakfast Sandwich
As a former vegan, I was excited to try Starbucks’ Impossible Breakfast Sandwich. While the Impossible sausage was decent, it wasn’t quite as good as real sausage. The ciabatta-like bread was good, but the flavors didn’t stand out. Still, when it’s prepared well, it’s hard to dislike.
McDonald’s Sausage, Egg & Cheese McGriddles
McGriddles are one of McDonald’s more unique creations. The pancake-like bread infused with syrup makes this sandwich stand out. It’s moist and flavorful, though the texture can be a little mushy. Still, it’s a fun breakfast option if you’re looking for something different.
Taco Bell Breakfast Crunchwrap Sausage
Taco Bell’s Breakfast Crunchwrap Sausage might not technically be a sandwich, but it’s close enough to make the list. It’s easy to eat on the go, and while the flavor is simple, it works well with a bit of Taco Bell’s signature sauce. It’s a great option for a mess-free, road-trip breakfast.
