A tragic story has emerged from Montgomery, Alabama, where a father of three with another child on the way was killed in a senseless act of violence. On January 8, 42-year-old Rosniery Mejia Magaña was shot and killed by a would-be robber who entered his home just as he was heading out to work.

According to his family, the shooter stepped into the house and shot Rosniery without warning. “Rosniery was on his way out, and the guy literally steps inside the house and just shoots him right in the face,” said his relative, Caren Montoya, in an interview.

The shooting happened early that morning in the 5100 block of Long Leaf Pine Drive in Montgomery. First responders arrived at the scene around 6:12 a.m. and found Rosniery dead. So far, no arrests have been made.

Rosniery was more than just a victim of violence. He was a husband, a father, a son, and a friend to many. Originally from Honduras, his family had moved to the United States to escape violence in their home country. They believed they had found safety and a chance for a better life. Now, they’re facing a heartbreak they never imagined.

Caren Montoya highlighted the cruel twist of fate that brought such a tragic end to Rosniery’s story. “They came fleeing from pretty much similar situations,” she explained. “They’ve had a lot of family murdered in their country, so they were fleeing that. And then this happens here.”

His death has left his family shaken and scared. “Everyone is terrified right now,” Montoya said. “His other cousin is afraid to go back to his own home. You’re not secure. You’re not.”

Adding to the heartbreak, Rosniery’s wife is pregnant with their fourth child. The family had planned to announce the news in a special way, but now that joy has been overshadowed by grief. Montoya recalled how she learned the news: “I found out that same day because [Rosniery’s wife] said something … and I was like, ‘Oh, you’re pregnant.’ She said, ‘We were trying to figure out a way to surprise the family.’”

The family has started a fundraiser to help cover the costs of sending Rosniery’s body back to Honduras for burial, as well as to support his wife and children during this devastating time. The fundraiser page asks for prayers and support, saying, “If anyone would like to help, we would greatly appreciate any donations. This will help cover those expenses and any necessities for his daughters and pregnant wife that he leaves behind.”

Montoya reassured supporters that the funds will go directly to Rosniery’s wife to assist her in navigating this difficult period. The family is grateful for all the kind words, prayers, and donations they’ve received so far.

This heartbreaking story is a reminder of the fragility of life and the resilience of families facing unimaginable loss. For those who can support or share their story, every little bit helps as they try to find strength in this challenging time.
