Savannah, Ga. – A Southwest Airlines pilot arrested for DUI moments before takeoff at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport will be prosecuted at the federal level, officials confirmed.
The pilot, David Allsop, was taken into custody on January 15 after failing a field sobriety test on the jet bridge, just before he was set to fly. Authorities discovered him in the cockpit, raising serious concerns about aviation safety.
Although Allsop was initially charged in Chatham County, District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones clarified that the case falls under federal jurisdiction due to its connection with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The case has been referred to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia for further action.
However, a spokesperson for the Southern District has stated that Allsop’s name does not currently appear in their system, leaving questions about the status of formal federal charges.
If indicted, Allsop could face severe federal penalties, potentially including jail time, fines, and a permanent ban from flying.
