Kapolei, HI – In a tragic and deeply disturbing case, two women—including the child’s mother—have been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of three-year-old Sarai Perez.

Authorities say Sarai and her three siblings endured years of starvation and abuse while living in a Kapolei townhouse complex. The investigation, which began last June, has now led to murder charges after forensic findings confirmed that Sarai died due to dehydration and starvation.

A Shocking Discovery

Honolulu police first responded to the home on June 13, 2024, after receiving a report of an unresponsive child. Upon arrival, first responders found Sarai malnourished, pulseless, and covered in bruises on her legs, hips, arms, face, back, and head. She was rushed to Queen’s Medical Center West, where she was pronounced dead.

Initially, the case was classified as an unattended death, but after extensive medical testing, it was reclassified as a homicide.

Years of Alleged Abuse and Neglect

Sarai’s mother, Janae Perez, 25, and her girlfriend, Ashleigh Utley, 33, were arrested on Thursday in the Kalihi area. Investigators revealed that Perez had four children and had pulled the two older boys—ages 5 and 6—out of school under the pretense of homeschooling them.

Police reports indicate that Perez and Utley frequently beat the children using their hands, sticks, paddles, slippers, and belts. The couple allegedly tried to blame Sarai’s five-year-old brother for her injuries, but investigators confirmed that all four children were victims of severe abuse.

Shocking video evidence retrieved from the suspects’ cell phones revealed the children being barricaded in their rooms. One disturbing clip showed Sarai crying in distress, begging for water and to use the bathroom. In response, Janae yelled and swore at her instead of helping her.

Legal Action and Charges

Following months of investigation, a forensic pathologist confirmed on Monday that Sarai’s death resulted from prolonged starvation and dehydration. Authorities also discovered that Perez and Utley failed to seek medical care for any of the children’s injuries or malnourishment.

Both women now face multiple charges, including:

  • Second-degree murder
  • Kidnapping
  • Endangering the welfare of a minor
  • Hindering prosecution

Meanwhile, the three surviving siblings have been placed in protective custody and are receiving medical care.

This heartbreaking case has shaken the community, with many calling for justice for Sarai and stronger protections for vulnerable children.
