Caldwell, ID – A 32-year-old man was arrested on burglary charges after police say he used a clever theft scheme at a local Walmart.

Dylan Rockwell was detained by Caldwell police on Sunday night after being accused of stealing a grill valued at $300. According to authorities, Rockwell used a ring with a barcode for tomato soup to scan larger items at the self-checkout, tricking the register into charging a much lower price.

Officers responded to the Walmart on Cleveland Boulevard after reports of a theft in progress. Though Rockwell had left the store by the time authorities arrived, police were able to track him to his home using a vehicle description. Once at his residence, they recovered the stolen items.

During questioning, Rockwell reportedly confessed to committing multiple thefts using the same method. Caldwell Chief of Police Rex Ingram humorously commented, “Sorry Mr. Rockwell, your tactics didn’t work this time, but we appreciate your creativity. We know that times are tough, but your ingenuity got you some county soup for dinner.”

Rockwell now faces charges for burglary, and authorities are continuing to investigate if additional thefts were committed using similar methods.
