LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A 27-year-old man has been charged with five counts of attempted murder after allegedly firing into a group of people near MacArthur Park, injuring five victims, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced on Monday.
Jose Daniel Amaya faces five charges of willful, deliberate, and premeditated attempted murder for the shooting, which occurred around 1 a.m. on January 22, 2025. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reports that Amaya fired multiple shots into a group of people near Wilshire Boulevard and South Alvarado Street, striking four men and one woman.
“Gun violence continues to be a devastating scourge in Los Angeles,” District Attorney Hochman said. “Today, my office has taken decisive action by filing five gun sentencing enhancements, one for each victim.”
Amaya was arrested the same day as the shooting, and he is being held without bail, according to jail records. The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, with details about what led to the incident remaining unclear.
If convicted, Amaya faces life in prison. He is scheduled to be arraigned on February 7, 2025.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about gun violence in Los Angeles, with officials vowing to continue taking strong legal actions against such crimes.
