In a bold move away from Europe, Russian President Vladimir Putin is now looking to ship gas to Iran instead. It’s a plan that could mean tens of billions of cubic meters of gas each year, according to The Moscow Times.

Right now, Russia and Iran are working out the details of how this gas deal will take shape. Putin shared that they are aiming to start small, with just up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas a year. But, the hope is that this will eventually grow into a huge deal, with as much as 55 billion cubic meters of gas flowing to Iran annually.

This news comes right after a meeting between Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, where they discussed these exciting plans.

But that’s not all. There’s also talk of a major agreement between Russia and Iran being signed on January 17. While some media reports suggest that Iran and Russia are discussing nuclear matters, the agreement will not recognize the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. According to political expert Taras Zahorodnii, this won’t change anything in terms of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

It’s important to note that after Russia made a similar deal with North Korea, there was a noticeable shift, with North Korean troops showing up in Ukraine. Two of them were even recently captured by Ukrainian forces.

Big things are happening, and as Russia continues to look for new partners, this gas deal with Iran could have significant impacts on energy and politics around the globe. Stay tuned!
