December 4, 2024—A 48-year-old Chicago woman returned from a Thanksgiving trip to find two migrants allegedly occupying her South Shore apartment, with one reportedly armed.

Incident Details

Upon arriving at her residence in the 7300 block of South Phillips Avenue around 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, the woman noticed her door was damaged. As she attempted to unlock it, the door swung open, revealing a man holding a firearm and speaking aggressively in Spanish. Frightened, she retreated to the lobby and contacted the police.

Responding officers knocked on the apartment door, which was answered by 20-year-old Yenifer Josefina Querales Garcia. Inside, they found 24-year-old Rainer De Jesus Escobar Tona emerging from a bedroom. A search revealed a loaded .40-caliber handgun, an empty extended magazine, and a rifle optic scope inside a suitcase. The victim confirmed these items did not belong to her.

Suspects’ Statements

Escobar Tona claimed he found the gun in the trash and paid someone $100 to gain access to the apartment. He denied being present during the initial confrontation with the victim.

Legal Proceedings

Both individuals face felony charges. Prosecutors requested detention for Escobar Tona on charges of residential burglary and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Querales Garcia faces robbery charges and was released with a GPS monitor. Escobar Tona remains in custody.

Community Concerns

This incident has heightened concerns about unauthorized migrants and public safety in Chicago. Residents are calling for increased security measures and stricter enforcement to prevent similar occurrences.
