Two dogs were electrocuted after stepping on manhole covers in Chicago’s Near North Side on Sunday morning, according to police.

The first incident happened around 11:45 a.m. when a woman called the police, reporting that her dog was shocked while walking over a manhole cover on North Dearborn Street (600 block). The dog was immediately taken to a veterinarian and was reported to be in good condition.

About two hours later, another report came in about a second dog getting electrocuted in the same area. The condition of this dog is unknown.

ComEd and city utility crews arrived at the scene, inspected the area, and later declared it safe. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the electrical hazard.

Pet owners in the area are advised to be cautious when walking their dogs near metal surfaces, especially during wet or snowy weather, as moisture can increase the risk of electrical currents on streets.

Police are continuing their investigation.
