RAVENNA, Ohio – A tense confrontation with Ravenna police ended in tragedy early Sunday when officers fatally shot a man who was using another person as a human shield, authorities said.

According to a police statement, officers responded to an apartment on Hazen Street around 1:30 a.m. after receiving a report of an armed man sleeping on the floor. Upon arrival, officers saw the suspect lying on the ground with a firearm in his waistband.

When officers ordered him to drop the weapon, he reportedly retreated inside and shut the door. Negotiations continued, but moments later, the suspect emerged, holding another man as a human shield. The hostage managed to break free, but police say the suspect then pointed a gun at them. In response, two officers opened fire, killing him.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released, and no officers were injured in the incident. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now handling the case.

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Ravenna police at 330-296-6486.
