When Donald Trump was transitioning into the presidency, it was supposed to be smooth sailing. With allies in Congress and a clear plan, it was expected to be a calm shift. But as we’ve seen, things have already spiraled into chaos.

One of the most bizarre and concerning moments of Trump’s transition came with his pick for attorney general: Matt Gaetz. Yes, the same Gaetz who’s now under fire after a shocking House Ethics Committee report dropped just before Christmas Eve. The report accused Gaetz of paying women for sex, having inappropriate relations with a 17-year-old, using illegal drugs, and accepting improper gifts. Yikes.

Despite these serious accusations, Gaetz still had the backing of Trump and key Republicans like JD Vance and Lindsey Graham. They seemed ready to back him up for one of the most powerful jobs in the country – even though the allegations against Gaetz raised alarm bells.

What does it say about Trump’s judgment when, out of all the possible choices, he picked someone with such a controversial past? And when Gaetz’s nomination collapsed after just eight days, didn’t everyone involved lose some credibility?

The Gaetz scandal isn’t just about him. It’s about the people who thought it was a good idea to push for his confirmation. In the end, it’s a reminder: There should be consequences when trust is misplaced.
